Gencon 2018 Recap, Part I
Gencon 2018 (Part I)
Game #1
Raid on the Nekromakina - Mutant Chronicles (2d20)
"The Doomtroopers are on the forefront of the war against the Dark Legion. This time they are sent on what looks like a 1-way journey to disable a facility producing undead Legionnaires."
Overview:
As noted on the tin, the party played Doomtroopers, charged with assaulting a 'Nekromakina' that was buried due to a sandstorm on Mars. The Nekromakinas are factories that 'recycle folks into members of the Dead Legion. Our team was following a scout team that never returned, and we were told to destroy the facility at any cost.
The Scenario:
We were deployed in a sandcrawler modified by the Brotherhood with wards to bypass the psychic detectors of the enemy, and travelled underground to the location of the Nekromakina. Upon exit we fired off multiple anti-tank missiles at some giant guardian statues that we assumed would attack us as soon as we passed their threshold. We were correct in that assumption, but turned them to rubble as they animated.
No stealth rolls required
Running across an open surface, underground firing anti-tank weapons and causing giant statues to explode meant that we didn't need to worry about sneaking in anymore.
Unfortunately a horde of the undead was waiting for us on the other side, fresh from the conversion process, but fortunately only armed with melee weapons.
One of our squad botched a shot from his assault rifle, resulting in a fairly destructive ricochet, and the rest of the squad turned to using their flamers.
As the horde closed, I chose to stow my ranged weapon, and dive into the horde with a dueling saber.
While several of the undead were beheaded, I rolled a complication and had my sword yanked from my hand as the undead wandered towards the processing facility and performed a 'Lorne Greene' style death scene.
Burning one of my (fate/fortune/don't remember) tokens I invoked a story change where a like saber was found in the pile of dead zombies...
The TLDR: Myself and the other Bauhaus brother died gloriously... And apparently 'ascended' for a few days until our low Willpower couldn't keep our corporeal form anymore.
The System: 2d20 plays better than it reads. Mutant Chronicles is the first in the line, and arguably the one with the most warts, but it was a blast to play and the mechanics supported the fluff.
