Worlds Without Number: The Elves of 3rd Age Middle Earth Origin Foci

Elves are tricky, as they are just materially better than Men, Dwarves and Hobbits. Their drawbacks come from their diminishing nature in this world, as well as the level of attention an Elf will draw from the Enemy if she is actively interfering in his plans.

As to how there are level 1 Elves? Well, you might be centuries old, but have diminished over time as the age of your people on Middle Earth draws to a close.

All elves have some traits in common:

  • They are effectively immortal unless killed by violence.
  • They may see in total darkness, so long as the light of a single star is visible. (So not underground or with heavy cloud cover)
  • Elves may not be tracked in the wilderness. They leave no footprints.
  • If an Elf has sight of the ocean, make a Save or be overcome by the call to journey over the sea to the West.
  • If an Elf is mortally wounded, but does not die, they must make a Save every week they are Frail to resist the call to journey West.
  • All Elves know Westeron(Common) and Sindarin.
  • The Enemy takes special notice of the presence of Elves.
  • Due to the short lives of Men, the appearance of an Elf in their midst is a story they will tell for generations. Passing quietly through their cities is difficult at best.
  • The Age of Elves has passed, and your interest in this world wanes. Any Project undertaken where the Elf is contributing Renown has its Active Opposition level stepped up one level.
  • Elves see the invisible and do not suffer fear from ghosts.
  • Elves are immune to the effects of natural cold temperatures.

For our purposes, there are two broad categories of Elves towards the end of the 3rd Age:

Thranduil, a Sindar Elf
Sindar Elves: Those elves that answered the call and journeyed to Valinor, but returned. (Thranduil would be an example.)

Sindarin
Level 1:

Gain either Craft , Know or Magic as a bonus skill. Sindarin orign elves are the only ones that may take the full Mage class at the GM’s discretion. (Having stepped foot in the land of Valinor.) Take a +1 modifier to Wisdom to reflect centuries of learning.
